Weekend Edition 3

October 5, 2013 By Naomi Robinson | Bakers Royale 11 Comments

The weekend edition is a catch-all for things happening inside, outside and all around this blog space.

I’m currently obsessing over Chiogga, aka candy cane beets. If you are a beet lover, you might like these more than the standard and golden one.

I’m pretty sure this is the last weekend in which I’ll see these at the farmers market, so like any proper hoarder, I bought too many.

Heirlooms

Speaking of things coming to an end, summer may be over but Matt and I are still stuck on these Pellegrino drinks. We prefer having them like this.

After three weeks of school, we are finally settling into the routine. Mornings aren’t as chaotic. We even have time for small celebrations. For what, I’m not sure. But Cole decided 7am breakfast before school was as good of a time as any to celebrate something. I hope he is always like this.

Matt and I found a new favorite dive. Good food. Horrible service. And I’m pretty sure the grill doesn’t see a scrubbing at the end of the evening—and that’s what makes it so good. I can taste the beef patty from yesterday’s lunch, the bacon grease from the breakfast rush and the onions from the omelette ordered before my French toast was laid down upon such gloriousness.

Now something new to the weekend edition—Face-off. Here’s how it works: Two like products will be tested and compared. One winner will be declared based on pre-set parameters.

This week’s Face-off: LeCreuset Spatula vs Gir Spatula. The first one being my standard, the second one a new product to hit the market.

Spatula Face-off

LeCreuset Revolution Spatula (medium size)

Gir Spatula

Size: 12 ½ inches; Spatula head: 2 ¼ x 3 ½ inches Size: 11 inches; Spatula head: 1 ¾ x 3 ½ inches
Handling: Slightly more comfortable to use since the handle is thicker at the mid-section for gripping. Handling: The thin handle makes it less comfortable for stirring because it requires the wrist to twerk a bit more.
Flexibility: Flexible tip supported by a sturdy body—excellent for scraping out bowls and pots with fewer strokes. Flexibility: Tip doesn’t flex as well, as a result, a few more strokes are needed to clean out bowls and pots.
Cleaning: One groove point (between spatula head and handle), that allows food and liquid to settle. Cleaning: Gir wins on this. The unibody design doesn’t have any space for food or liquid to settle in.
Cost: $9.99 (Amazon) Cost: $22.50 (Amazon)

Because I am often asked about my set-up—here it is—it’s small, cramped, and a mess. One day I will organize it. So long as there is no moldy dead food, spilled rotting liquids, or old crusty food crawling, I’m good.

Love the Pellegrino stickers – the colors are so upbeat. Face-off is such a cool concept (I’ve always wondered about Gir spatulas) and getting a glimpse of your set-up is inspiring!

Sounds like Cole is my kind of kid! And I love his shirt. Also, I tried this recipe for roasted tomato soup (http://awoodennest.blogspot.com/2013/09/garden-fresh-roasted-tomato-soup.html). Pretty much the best thing ever for using up too many tomatoes…not including my grandmother’s tomato soup, but hers has milk and cream and butter and I can’t have any of those things right now. 🙁

Awe, Cole is so cool! I love that he wants to celebrate the morning. So fun!
Love the idea of the face off. I have never heard of Gir spatulas, but I am sticking with my LeCreuset, it never fails! Also, I loved seeing your set up. I am becoming more and more into photography and capturing a beautiful image and your photos are alway ones I look too for inspiration. Which is why I am crazy excited for next weeks weekend edition!
